Wearing costumes was once a way to hide from ghosts! People would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would think they were spirits too. People would also leave food outside their doors to keep the ghosts happy.
Orange and black are the colours mostly associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance which stands for autumn and the harvest. Black is the typical symbol of death and darkness as the festival was once marked the boundaries between life and death.
