Wearing costumes was once a way to hide from ghosts! People would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would think they were spirits too. People would also leave food outside their doors to keep the ghosts happy.

Trick-or-treating has existed since medieval times when young people dressed up and asked for food/money in exchange for poems and songs. Today the tradition has changed to children getting dressed up and asking for sweets.
