Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar is used for the cultivation and enumeration of microorganisms in dairy and bottled water products. Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In the 1930’s, Bower and Hucker developed a medium for detecting bacteria in milk and other dairy products. Prickett used a glucose agar containing tryptone to study thermophilic bacteria in milk. This medium is known as Yeast Dextrose Agar. In 1948, the American Public Health Association (APHA) adopted Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar for use in testing milk and dairy products. Currently, APHA specifies Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar for the heterotrophic plate count procedure in testing bottled water. Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar is also known as Yeast Dextrose Agar.

Casman Medium Base is used with blood for the isolation of Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and other fastidious microorganisms in a laboratory setting. Casman Medium Base is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1947, Casman described an infusion-free medium enriched with 5% blood for fastidious microorganisms incubated anaerobically. This medium replaced formulas containing fresh meat infusion and heated blood. Casman adjusted the formula after experiments revealed nicotinamide disrupted the action of a blood enzyme that inactivates V factor (NAD). The concentration of nicotinamide was lowered to support growth of Neisseria spp.

Clostridium Difficile Agar Base (Brazier’s) is used with blood, Cycloserine, and Cefoxitin for the isolation of Clostridium difficile. Clostridium Difficile is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Brazier’s CCEY agar is the formulation currently used by the Anaerobe Reference Unit for the isolation of C. difficile, resulting from work initiated by Ken Phillips and Paul Levett, and completed by Jon Brazier. Based upon the market leading anaerobe medium, Fastidious Anaerobe Agar, it incorporates additional ingredients to improve the isolation and differentiation of C. difficile from samples. Cholic acid is present to promote spore germination following alcohol shock treatment, and p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid to enhance the production of p-cresol, a distinctive metabolite of C. difficile. Selectivity is achieved by addition of supplement X093 (cefoxitin cycloserine) and egg yolk emulsion X075 is added to help differentiate C. difficile from lecithinase positive clostridia. Finally, the addition of lysed horse blood optimizes the recognition of colony fluorescence when cultures are examined using UV light.

In addition, this sampling device is decontaminated through gamma irradiation for long shelf life. The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) approach is the most widely accepted food safety management protocol worldwide. Sample collection products from Neogen® are a crucial part of this approach to identify potential food-borne hazards and pinpoint where they reside. Portability, stable enrichment media, and easy-to-handle swabs and sponges are designed to test for a wide variety of potential hazards and deliver exceptionally accurate results. D/E Neutralising Broth, developed by Dey and Engley, is used in disinfectant testing where neutralization of the antiseptics and disinfectants is important for determining its bactericidal activity. It is effective for neutralising a broad spectrum of disinfectants and preservative antimicrobial chemicals, such as ammonium compounds, phenolics, iodine, chlorine preparations, mercurials, formaldehyde, and glutaraldehyde. Universal Beer Agar is used for the cultivation of bacteria and yeasts encountered in the brewing industry in a laboratory setting. Universal Beer Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Universal Beer Agar was developed by Kozulis and Page and used as a basal medium supplemented with beer. The developers compared this formula with other media commonly used in breweries for detecting microbial contamination. The characteristics of Universal Beer Agar are closer to natural environmental conditions found in a typical brewery. Universal Beer Agar supports the growth of more lactic acid bacteria and yields larger colonies in a shorter time than traditional brewer’s media. Supplementing this medium with beer has produced a selective environment for organisms that are adapted to existent conditions in the brewery. The presence of hop constituents and alcohol inhibits growth of many airborne microorganisms not adapted to this environment. Universal Beer Agar supports growth of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, Acetobacter, and yeasts that are known beer contaminants. Universal Beer Agar is abbreviated as UBA.
