The media that Gem Scientific use is designed to not only provide you with the most accurate results but visually distinctive dependent on the product type and the level of bacteria found at the original testing location

Within each box of Gem Scientific dip slides is a handy comparison chart to demonstrate what level of contamination the tested area has. This is measured by the coverage of the media by the bacteria recovered from the sample or area tested. Regular testing is recommended to ensure your regimes are being maintained and bacteria levels are as low as possible.

Storage

Store in a cool dry place (Optimum 8-15oC) and use before the expiry date on the box. Do not use slides if there is any sign of growth before opening. Slides remain usable while the agar is smooth and attached to the slide. A small amount of water may collect at the bottom of the tube. This is condensate from the agar and does not affect performance, provided the agar still fills the tray.

Disposal

Used slides should be incinerated, autoclaved or soaked in disinfectant for several hours before disposal.

LB Agar - Miller - 500 g

£110.65 vat excl.

£132.78 vat Inc.

Availability: Out of stock
LB Agar (Miller), a nutritionally rich medium designed for growth of pure cultures of recombinant strains, is based on the formulation described by Miller. E. coli is grown to late log phase in LB Medium. Some plasmid vectors replicate to a high copy number and do not require selective amplification. Some vectors do not replicate so freely and need to be selectively amplified. Chloramphenicol may be added to inhibit host synthesis and prevent replication of the bacterial chromosome. LB Agar, Miller contains 10 g/L of sodium chloride, different from the levels in Lennox formulations. This allows the researcher to select the optimal salt concentration for a specific strain. The medium may be aseptically supplemented with glucose or antibiotics.

Soy Peptone

£854.50 vat excl.

£1,025.40 vat Inc.

Availability: Out of stock
Soy Peptone is for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Soy peptone is a rich source of nutrients with a high carbohydrate content. Most organisms will grow rapidly in this peptone but some bacteria will produce high levels of acid leading to auto-sterilization unless an adequate buffering system is incorporated.

Tetrathionate (TT) Broth Base, Hajna is used as a selective enrichment for the cultivation of Salmonella species (except S. typhi) from samples in a laboratory setting. Tetrathionate (TT) Broth Base, Hajna is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Tetrathionate Broth Base, Hajna, is recommended in the Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods and the FDA/BAM for the Environmental Sampling and Detection of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Poultry Houses and whole eggs.. Salmonella organisms may be present but injured in food-processing procedures, which include exposure to low temperatures, sub-marginal heat, drying, radiation, preservative, and sanitisers. Numerous reported cases of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) infections are associated with contaminated shell eggs. SE infections can be very serious and symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting. Eggs can become contaminated on the farm because a laying hen can become infected with SE and pass the bacteria into the egg before it is laid. If the egg is not refrigerated, the bacteria can grow inside the uncracked, whole egg. Tetrathionate Broth Base, Hajna was developed by Hajna and Damon.

Nutrient Broth No. 2

£413.64 vat excl.

£496.37 vat Inc.

Availability: Out of stock
Nutrient Both No. 2 is used for the cultivation of fastidious bacteria, and forms the base for Preston Broth according to ISO 10272-1:2017 for the cultivation of Campylobacter spp. This media is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. This broth can also be used as the suspending medium for cooked meat granules for the cultivation of anaerobic organisms.

Dermatophyte Test Medium is used for the selective isolation of dermatophytic fungi and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1969, Taplin et al. developed this medium for the isolation and recognition of dermatophytic fungi, the causative agent of ringworm from hair, nails, and skin. Dermatophyte Test Medium is preferred for isolation and early recognition of Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton genera because of a distinct color change in the medium. Rapidly-growing species may produce a complete color change in the medium in 3 days. The slower-growing species will change the indicator in longer time periods. Other organisms may grow but can be recognized as non-dermatophytes by lack of a color change. A few organisms, including saprophytes, yeasts, and bacteria are capable of changing the medium from red to yellow, but are easily recognized by their distinctive colonial morphology.

Neogen® Swab-Sampler with 10 mL Letheen Broth is a convenient and quick collection device for environmental sampling and testing over small surface areas.

Sample collection is easy with the attached swab. The vial provides ample headspace for sample addition and vortexing to release organisms from the swab. This sampling device is decontaminated through gamma irradiation for long shelf life. The Neogen® Swab-Sampler is made in the USA with globally sourced materials. The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) approach is the most widely accepted food safety management protocol worldwide. Sample collection products from Neogen® are a crucial part of this approach to identify potential food-borne hazards and pinpoint where they reside. Portability, stable enrichment media, and easy-to-handle swabs and sponges are designed to test for a wide variety of potential hazards and deliver accurate results. They are engineered to safely gather, hold, and secure contents from the collection site to the lab without leaking or compromising the sample.

The primary use of Letheen Broth is to neutralise the bactericidal action of quaternary ammonium compounds and for determining the phenol coefficient of cationic surfactants. Letheen Broth is also used in hygiene swabbing practices where neutralizing quaternary ammonium compounds are required.
