Maximum Recovery Diluent combines the protective effect of peptone in the diluting solution1 with the osmotic support of physiological saline1,2. The low peptone concentration in the diluent reduces organism multiplication in the sample for at least 45 minutes during the dilution stage1,2. Maintain the viability of organisms during the dilution process with Maximum Recovery Diluent with low levels of peptone.

  • Allows accurate quantitative procedures to be performed with minimal reduction in viable count.
  • Reduces organism multiplication in the sample for at least one hour during the dilution stage.

The presence of peptone in the diluent provides viable counts to ensure accurate quantitative procedures are performed. The isotonic strength of the diluent ensures recovery of organisms from various sources which may be vulnerable in distilled water or aqueous suspensions.

Selenite Broth is used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella spp. in a laboratory setting. Selenite Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Selenite Broth was originated by Leifson, while observing good recovery of Salmonella spp. and reduced growth of fecal coliforms. Salmonella organisms are also injured in food-processing procedures, including exposure to low temperatures, sub-marginal heat, drying, radiation, preservatives or sanitisers. Selenite Broth conforms with the American Public Health Association (APHA). Many modifications of Selenite Broth exist, including Selenite Cystine Broth, from the original formula described as Selenite F Broth by Leifson.

Yersinia Selective Agar is used with cefsulodin and novobiocin for the isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica in a laboratory setting. Yersinia Selective Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. This medium is based on the work of Schiemann. It is used for the isolation and enumeration of Yersinia spp. from clinical samples and from food. The selective components are sodium desoxycholate, crystal violet, cefsulodin, irgasan and novobiocin. Yersiniae ferment mannitol with an intense, localized, acid production in the center of the colony which produces a red ‘bull’s eye’ appearance. The ratio of transparent border to red centre varies with serotype and environmental strains may appear rough with an irregular edge. Most other enteric bacteria, if they grow, produce a larger colony with a diffuse pinkish center and opaque outer zone.

MWE have been manufacturing DRYSWAB™ for over 70 years. These are the fundamental tools used to collect specimens or samples for analysis, or simply to transfer materials during a diagnostic procedure.

Traditionally, the bud on the swab has consisted of a spun fibre such as cotton, rayon, polyester or calcium alginate wound round the end of the shaft which would be wood, plastic or wire. In recent years, novel bud materials have been introduced, such as soft cellular polyurethane foam, or flocked fibres which can give improved uptake and release of specimens. Medical Wire have extensive ranges of swabs utilising either spun fibres, cellular foam, or multifilament flock fibres, with something suitable for many applications.
