MRS Agar

£446.71 vat excl.

£536.05 vat Inc.

Availability: Out of stock
MRS Agar is a medium for the enumeration of mesophilic lactic acid bacteria according to ISO 15214:1998, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. MRS Agar was originally developed in 1960 by de Man, Rogosa & Sharpe for the cultivation and enumeration of Lactobacillus spp. from various sources and is intended as a substitute for Tomato Juice Agar. This original formulation has been adapted and adjusted to pH 5.7 according to ISO 15214:1998. Nutrition is provided by enzymatic digest of casein, glucose, meat & yeast extracts whilst polyoxyethylenesorbitan monooleate, magnesium and manganese sulphates act as growth stimulants. Selectivity against streptococci & molds is provided by ammonium citrate and sodium acetate. Used at low pH, ammonium citrate allows growth of lactobacilli whilst inhibiting a number of other organism groups. Occasionally, sterilization of this medium at 121°C can cause the pH to fall outside of the specified pH limits 5.7 +/- 0.1. In these rare cases adjustment of the medium using acetic acid or sodium hydroxide is recommended.

Clostridium Difficile Agar Base (Brazier’s) is used with blood, Cycloserine, and Cefoxitin for the isolation of Clostridium difficile. Clostridium Difficile is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Brazier’s CCEY agar is the formulation currently used by the Anaerobe Reference Unit for the isolation of C. difficile, resulting from work initiated by Ken Phillips and Paul Levett, and completed by Jon Brazier. Based upon the market leading anaerobe medium, Fastidious Anaerobe Agar, it incorporates additional ingredients to improve the isolation and differentiation of C. difficile from samples. Cholic acid is present to promote spore germination following alcohol shock treatment, and p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid to enhance the production of p-cresol, a distinctive metabolite of C. difficile. Selectivity is achieved by addition of supplement X093 (cefoxitin cycloserine) and egg yolk emulsion X075 is added to help differentiate C. difficile from lecithinase positive clostridia. Finally, the addition of lysed horse blood optimizes the recognition of colony fluorescence when cultures are examined using UV light.

Neogen® Swab-Sampler with Buffered Peptone Water Broth

£105.66 vat excl.

£126.79 vat Inc.

Availability: Out of stock

Buffered Peptone Water Broth is used as a diluent or for non selective enrichment of microorganisms such as Salmonella species or E. coli from foods and environmental samples prior to selective enrichment and isolation. Microorganisms that may be present in a food product can be sub-lethally injured by food processing techniques and may not be recovered by direct selection techniques. Buffered Peptone Water Broth promotes the recovery of those microorganisms that may be injured.

MWE have been manufacturing DRYSWAB™ for over 70 years. These are the fundamental tools used to collect specimens or samples for analysis, or simply to transfer materials during a diagnostic procedure.

Traditionally, the bud on the swab has consisted of a spun fibre such as cotton, rayon, polyester or calcium alginate wound round the end of the shaft which would be wood, plastic or wire. In recent years, novel bud materials have been introduced, such as soft cellular polyurethane foam, or flocked fibres which can give improved uptake and release of specimens. Medical Wire have extensive ranges of swabs utilising either spun fibres, cellular foam, or multifilament flock fibres, with something suitable for many applications.
