The use of Neutralising Buffer is advised for surface testing for the presence of microorganisms that may occur on dairy and food equipment disinfected with chlorine or quaternary ammonium compounds. It is capable of inactivating the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect of chlorine and quaternary ammonium composites. Neutralising these chemicals is crucial in accurately detecting the presence of potentially harmful microorganisms. Using Neutralising Buffer in the microbiological examination of surfaces in standard methods to test dairy products and foods.

Tip - Foam: This soft sponge-like material has a regular cellular matrix. Uptake of microorganisms and other sample materials can be easily acquired from the area that’s being sampled. The structure of this swab bud allows for complete absorption & release of sample into transport media or reagents.

Traditionally, the bud on the swab has consisted of a spun fibre such as cotton, rayon, polyester or calcium alginate wound round the end of the shaft which would be wood, plastic or wire. In recent years, novel bud materials have been introduced, such as soft cellular polyurethane foam, or flocked fibres which can give improved uptake and release of specimens. Medical Wire have extensive ranges of swabs utilising either spun fibres, cellular foam, or multifilament flock fibres, with something suitable for many applications.

Tip - Rayon: Rayon, also known as Viscose, is a processed form of cellulose and has been found to be particularly suitable for the recovery of microorganisms. The texture is similar to that of cotton, but it has none of the fatty acids or other substances that can be inhibitory to fastidious bacteria. It has also been shown to be compatible with many molecular based diagnostic tests. Rayon buds are used on most of our transport swabs.

MWE’s ISOLATION TRANSWABS® are a unique, convenient and cost-effective range of self-contained environmental sampling swabs.

The kits includes a swab for sampling the surface, which is then placed in the provided tube of coloured gel medium, which in turn changes colour if positive.

  • COLIFORM ISOLATION TRANSWAB®: Result can be available within 24 hrs (max 48 hrs) Colour change for positive: PURPLE to YELLOW
  • HYGIENE ISOLATION TRANSWAB®: Similar to ISOLATION TRANSWAB® but used as indicator for gross microbial contamination. Result available within 8 -12 hrs Colour change for positive: RED to YELLOW
  • LISTERIA ISOLATION TRANSWAB®: Result can be available within 24 hrs (max 48 hrs) Colour change for positive: STRAW to BLACK
  • SALMONELLA ISOLATION TRANSWAB®: Result can be available within 24 hrs (max 48 hrs) Colour change for positive: RED to BLACK
