Letheen Broth with Tween, Modified is used for the recovery of microorganisms from cosmetics in a laboratory setting and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1948, Weber and Black described the value of a highly nutritional solid medium containing neutralizing agents for quaternary ammonium compounds in sanitisers. The addition of Lecithin and Polysorbate 80 to Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar resulted in a medium that effectively neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds in testing of germicidal activity. Total neutralization of disinfectants is critical as disinfectant residues can result in a false negative (no-growth) test result. Letheen Broth with Tween, Modified is based on the formula described in FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual, and a modification of Letheen Broth Base. This medium is recommended by the FDA for use in the microbiological testing of cosmetics. Letheen Broth with Tween, Modified has Polysorbate 80 (Tween) incorporated into the medium.

Brilliant Green Agar w/ Sulfapyridine is used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella spp. in a laboratory setting. Brilliant Green Agar w/ Sulfapyridine is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Brilliant Green Agar was first described by Kristensen et al and later modified by Kauffmann. The outstanding selectivity of this medium permits the use of moderately heavy inocula evenly distributed over the surface. The addition of sulfonamides into Brilliant Green Agar further inhibits Escherichia coli and Proteus spp. Osborne and Stokes used 0.1% Sodium Sulfapyridine to enhance the recovery of Salmonella from whole egg and egg yolk.

It is capable of inactivating the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect of chlorine and quaternary ammonium composites. Lactobacilli MRS Broth is used for the cultivation of lactobacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Lactobacilli MRS broth was originally developed in 1960 by de Man, Rogosa & Sharpe, the medium can be used for confirmatory tests on organisms isolated on MRS Agar. The medium can also be used for enumeration by the Miles and Misra technique. Nutrition is provided by a mixture of carefully selected peptones, glucose, beef and yeast extracts while Tween® 80, magnesium and manganese sulfates act as growth stimulants. Selectivity against streptococci & molds is provided by ammonium citrate and sodium acetate. Occasionally, sterilization of this medium at 121°C for 15 minutes, in some autoclaves, may cause the pH to fall outside of the specified pH limits 6.4 +/- 0.2. In these rare cases, adjustment of the medium using acetic acid or sodium hydroxide is recommended.

m-Enterococcus Agar is used for the selective isolation and enumeration of enterococci by membrane filtration in a laboratory setting. m-Enterococcus Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. m-Enterococcus Agar was first described by Slanetz et al. for the enumeration of enterococci by the membrane filtration technique. In 1957, Slanetz and Bartley modified this medium by adding triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC). Increased recovery and larger colonies were obtained by incubating the inoculated membranes on the agar surface instead of on pads saturated with liquid medium. The membrane filtration method is simple to perform, does not require confirmation, and permits a direct count of enterococci in 48 hours. m-Enterococcus Agar is also referred to as m-Azide Agar. The presence of enterococci is a valuable bacterial indicator for determining the extend of fecal contamination of recreational surface waters. m-Enterococcus Agar is recommended for the detection of fecal streptococci using the membrane filtration technique for water testing. The food industry also has applications for testing enterococci using m-Enterococcus Agar.
