Letheen Agar Base Modified (without Tween) is used with Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80) for the isolation of microorganisms from cosmetics in a laboratory setting. Letheen Agar Base Modified is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1948, Weber and Black described the value of a highly nutritional solid medium containing neutralizing agents for quaternary ammonium compounds in sanitisers. The addition of Lecithin and Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80) to Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar resulted in a medium that effectively neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds in testing of germicidal activity. Total neutralization of disinfectants is critical. Disinfectant residues can result in a false negative (no-growth) test. Letheen Agar Base Modified is based on the formula described in FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual, and a modification of Letheen Agar Base. Letheen Agar Base Modified is recommended by the FDA for use in the microbiological testing of cosmetics.

Gelatin is a protein source and solidifying agent for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Gelatin is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Gelatin is a protein of uniform molecular constitution derived chiefly by the hydrolysis of collagen. Collagens are a class of albuminoids found abundantly in bones, skin, tendons, cartilage and similar animal tissues. Koch introduced gelatin into bacteriology when he invented the gelatin tube method in 1875 and the plate method in 1881. This innovation, a solid culture method, became the foundation for investigating bacterial growth. Gelatin-based media were soon replaced by media containing agar as the solidifying agent. Gelatin is used in culture media for determining gelatinolysis (elaboration of gelatinases) by bacteria. Several media containing gelatin are specified in standard methods for multiple applications.

Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose (TCBS) Agar is used for the selective isolation of Vibrio cholerae and other enteropathogenic vibrios according to ISO 21872-1:2017 and ISO 21872-2:2007. Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose (TCBS) Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. TCBS Agar is also called Vibrio Selective Agar, and prepared according to the formula of Kobayashi et al. This formula is a modification of the selective medium from Nakanishi. All pathogenic Vibrio spp., except Vibrio hollisae, will grow on TCBS Agar. This highly selective agar meets the nutritional requirements of Vibrio spp. Vibrio spp. are able to grow in media containing increased salt concentrations, and some species are halophilic. Infections have been associated with ingestion of contaminated water and consumption of contaminated shellfish or seafood. Vibrio spp. are natural inhabitants of seawater. According to ISO 21872-2, pre-incubation in Alkaline Saline Peptone Water (ASPW) (NCM0175) is required.

Palcam Agar Base is used with supplements as a selective and differential medium for the detection and isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from food and environmental samples. Palcam Agar Base is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Palcam Agar was developed by Van Netten et al in 1989 as an improved selective differential medium for the isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from food and environmental specimens. Improved selectivity is achieved by the combination of antibiotic supplements and microaerobic incubation. The double indicator system of esculin hydrolysis and mannitol fermentation aids differentiation of Listeria spp from enterococci and staphylococci which can be confused with Listeria spp on other types of culture media. Palcam Agar is listed within Annex E of ISO 11290-1:2017 as a suitable second selective agar.
